Preparing for Lifelong Treatment
Hypothyroidism is a condition requiring lifelong treatment for most people. And even though it usually requires just one pill a day to keep your thyroid hormones in balance, you still might have a hard time accepting the fact that you’ll be taking your medicine for a lifetime. This is normal, especially if you’ve never had to take daily medication for a condition before.
These tips might help you accept lifetime treatment a little easier:
- Think positively. Remember the pay off – taking your medication every day will help you achieve your treatment goals.
- Be patient. At the beginning of treatment and at different times throughout your life, your doctor might need to adjust your medication dose to make sure you’re at the dose that’s right for you. This includes trips to the doctor's office and simple blood tests.
- Keep learning. Understanding your condition and treatment inside-out can help you feel more in control. So keep seeking resources and ask your doctor any questions you have – open communication between you and your doctor is an important part of managing hypothyroidism.
- Connect with people like you. Get support and inspiration from other people living with hypothyroidism. Check out online or in-person support groups.
